Paul W. Downs: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Paul W. Downs came up through New York's Upright Citizens Brigade, broke out as Trey on Broad City, and then co-created Hacks with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky — a show built on the mythology of American stand-up and the mentor/protégé melodramas of classic Hollywood. This mix traces both halves of his career: the performer-writer of downtown NYC sketch and the showrunner excavating comedy history.
The Kynda mix for Paul W. Downs
- Key Influence · Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (2010). Deborah Vance's DNA is Joan Rivers: the Vegas residency, the QVC jewelry line, the relentless appetite for stage time, the daughter entangled in the business. This documentary follows Rivers through a year of grinding club dates and card-catalog joke files, and its portrait of a woman who refuses to stop working at 75 is the engine Downs, Aniello and Statsky built Hacks around, down to Deborah's horror at an empty calendar page.
- Influencia Obscura · Enter Talking by Joan Rivers (1986). Rivers' first memoir covers the lean Greenwich Village years before Carson — the failed auditions, the cheap apartments, the humiliations that forged the armor. It is the origin story Hacks keeps flashing back to, and the book's bitter precision about how a woman in mid-century stand-up had to be twice as hard explains Deborah's cruelty as much as her craft. Far less read than Rivers' later jokebooks, and far more revealing.
- Local Roots · Wet Hot American Summer by David Wain (2001). The founding text of the New York alt-comedy ecosystem Downs trained in. Wain and The State fed directly into Upright Citizens Brigade's East Village theatre, where Downs performed and taught before Broad City; the same improv pipeline produced Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. Its deadpan absurdity and ensemble-of-friends economics are the house style Downs' early on-camera work grew out of.
- Beyond the Medium · All About Eve by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1950). The template Hacks rewrites: an aging star and the hungry young woman who attaches herself as assistant, where mentorship and predation are indistinguishable. Margo Channing's terror of obsolescence and her weaponized wit run straight through Deborah Vance, while Ava is Eve Harrington recast with sincerity. Downs and his collaborators make the dynamic generational rather than simply treacherous.
- Peer · The Other Two by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (2019). The closest contemporary sibling to Hacks: a showbiz satire written by performer-writers about the humiliations of proximity to fame, balancing genuine cruelty with unexpected tenderness toward its strivers. Kelly and Schneider, like Downs, moved from sketch-world writing rooms into running their own half-hour, and both shows share a cast pool and a taste for industry inside baseball played at speed.
- From the Canon · Hacks by Paul W. Downs (2021). Co-created, co-written and co-run with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, with Downs also playing the beleaguered manager Jimmy. It fuses his two trades: the performer's instinct for a reaction shot and the writer's structural interest in how comedy careers are actually built and destroyed. The Deborah-Ava relationship gave him a vehicle for arguments about generational taste that his sketch background only gestured at.
- Key Collaborator · The Good Place by Michael Schur (2016). Statsky, the third co-creator of Hacks, wrote for Schur's afterlife comedy, and that room's discipline — rigorous plotting, jokes built on character ethics, long-arc payoffs — shows up in how tightly Hacks constructs its seasons. The partnership between Downs, Aniello and Statsky is the show's actual authorship, and Statsky's network-comedy apprenticeship supplied its structural spine.
- Legacy · PEN15 by Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle (2019). Erskine and Konkle built their series on the Broad City model Downs helped establish: two women writing, producing and starring as fictionalized versions of themselves, with a male collaborator inside the creative core, made cheaply and specifically for a cable-to-streaming audience. The friendship-as-central-romance structure that Broad City normalized is the load-bearing wall of PEN15.
