Hacks: influences, peers and legacy

Every connection with its receipt

Hacks sits at the junction of two comedy lineages: the hard-shelled, joke-machine generation of female stand-ups who built careers in nightclubs and Vegas rooms, and the millennial, internet-formed sensibility its creators came from at Broad City. This mix traces Deborah Vance's ancestors, the Las Vegas mythology the show lives inside, and the backstage-showbiz melodramas that give it its teeth.

The Kynda mix for Hacks

  • Key Influence · Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (2010). The documentary that most clearly prefigures Deborah Vance: Rivers at 75, obsessive about her card-catalog joke files, taking any gig, terrified of an empty calendar, hustling QVC merchandise while resenting the industry that sidelined her. Hacks' creators have repeatedly pointed to Rivers' late-career grind — the cosmetic surgery, the jewelry line, the refusal to retire — as the template for a woman whose comedy and survival instinct are the same organ.
  • Influencia Obscura · Phyllis Diller Laughs by Phyllis Diller (1963). Diller's club album is the buried ancestor of Deborah's act: self-deprecating machine-gun one-liners, a fictional husband as recurring punchline, costume and cackle as armor. Diller famously kept a steel file cabinet of tens of thousands of index-carded gags — the literal precursor to the joke archive Ava discovers. The brittle, built-to-order punchline rhythm Smart performs is Diller's engineering more than anyone's.
  • Local Roots · Casino by Martin Scorsese (1995). Hacks' Las Vegas is a company town with a long memory, and Casino is its definitive portrait: the residency economy, the back-of-house politics, the sense that the Strip's glamour is a labor arrangement. Deborah's ownership of her theater, her feud over Friday-night slots and her status as a legacy act in a town that discards legacy acts all read as the post-mob, corporate-resort afterlife of the world Scorsese filmed.
  • Beyond the Medium · All About Eve by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1950). The master text for the older female star and the younger woman who arrives as assistant, becomes collaborator, and threatens to become replacement. Margo Channing's mix of monstrous ego and clear-eyed self-knowledge is Deborah's direct ancestor, and the Ava relationship repeatedly flirts with the Eve Harrington dynamic — admiration curdling into appropriation, mentorship as a form of mutual predation.
  • Peer · The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel by Amy Sherman-Palladino (2017). The other major streaming-era series about a woman building a stand-up career against an industry that has no slot for her, airing in overlapping years and often discussed alongside Hacks in awards seasons. Where Maisel romanticizes the mid-century club circuit Deborah actually came up in, Hacks picks up the story fifty years later and asks what that ambition costs by the time it has won.
  • Key Collaborator · Mare of Easttown by Brad Ingelsby (2021). Jean Smart is the collaborator who makes Hacks possible; the role was built for her voice and timing. Mare of Easttown, airing the same spring, shows the other half of her instrument — the dry, armored maternal cruelty and the ability to land a laugh inside grief. Watching her scenes with Kate Winslet clarifies how much of Deborah's menace comes from Smart's control of pause and withholding.
  • Legacy · Mid-Century Modern by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan (2025). A Max comedy that arrives in the lane Hacks widened: an older-skewing ensemble led by veteran performers, set partly in a glossy Palm Springs/desert Southwest, treating late-life reinvention as prime comic material rather than a sidebar. Hacks' success in proving that a half-hour built around a performer in her seventies could win awards and subscribers made this kind of casting commissionable again.
