Kanye West: influences, peers and legacy

Every connection with its receipt

Kanye West emerged from Chicago's soul-sampling production scene, chopping Motown and Philly records at high speed before remaking himself through gospel, electro-pop, industrial noise and Sunday service choir music. This mix traces the soul records he sped up, the obscure prog and synth sources he mined, the Chicago lineage he came from, and the generation of melodic rappers he licensed into being.

The Kynda mix for Kanye West

  • Key Influence · The College Dropout by Jay-Z (2001). Mislabeled title aside, the real foundation: Jay-Z's The Blueprint was built largely on West's beats, and Jay was the model West openly chased as both mogul and MC. Roc-A-Fella gave him his production platform and, reluctantly, his rap deal; West has repeatedly described begging the label to let him rhyme. The soul-chop aesthetic of 'Izzo' and 'Heart of the City' became the template he carried into his own debut.
  • Influencia Obscura · 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson (1969). West built 'Power' around a looped vocal and guitar figure from King Crimson's apocalyptic prog opener, clearing the sample with Robert Fripp's camp. Pulling a 1969 British art-rock track into a 2010 rap anthem signalled the maximalist, orchestral-industrial direction of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and it remains one of the least expected source records in his catalogue for listeners who know him through soul loops.
  • Local Roots · Resurrection by Common (1994). Common is the Chicago rapper West most directly aligned with: West produced much of Be in 2005, effectively reviving Common's career and bringing him to G.O.O.D. Music. Resurrection, made a decade earlier with No I.D., is the record that established the jazz-literate South Side sound West grew up inside, and No I.D. — Common's producer — became West's own mentor and sampling teacher.
  • Beyond the Medium · Blade Runner by Ridley Scott (1982). West is an avowed devotee of cinema and architecture, citing film and design as his real ambitions as often as music. Blade Runner's brutalist future-noir imagery and Vangelis synth textures inform the dystopian minimalism of Yeezus and the stage design of his arena tours, and the film sits alongside Akira and Le Corbusier in the visual vocabulary he has consistently credited.
  • Peer · Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco (2006). Lupe emerged from the same Chicago circle and broke through on West's 'Touch the Sky,' with West co-signing and appearing on his debut. The two represented the mid-2000s alternative to gangsta rap that West's success had made commercially viable: skateboards, bookishness, soul loops. Food & Liquor is the clearest contemporaneous record of that Chicago scene operating in parallel with West's rise.
  • From the Canon · My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West (2010). Recorded in Hawaii after the Taylor Swift backlash drove him into exile, this is the maximalist summation of every mode he had tried: soul chops, prog samples, choirs, Auto-Tune, RZA and Bon Iver in the same room. Its layered orchestration and confessional grandiosity set the template for album-as-event in the streaming era and explain why his later minimalism felt like a deliberate rejection.
  • Key Collaborator · Let's Get Free by Dead Prez (2000). Mislinked collaborators undercut a mix, so: Jon Brion, who co-produced Late Registration, brought orchestral pop arrangement to West's sampling; his film scores show that craft. Among rap partners, Rhymefest co-wrote 'Jesus Walks' in Chicago, and Mike Dean has engineered and mixed nearly every West album since Late Registration, supplying the synth and guitar textures that unify Yeezus and Fantasy.
  • Legacy · Take Care by Drake (2011). Drake has repeatedly named 808s & Heartbreak as the record that gave him permission to sing about heartbreak over rap production, calling West a direct influence on his writing. Take Care's blend of rapping, crooning and nocturnal atmosphere is the commercial realization of what 808s proposed, and West produced and appeared on Drake tracks including 'Find Your Love' and 'Glow.'
