Edward Enninful: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Edward Enninful's rise runs from a teenage fashion director's desk at i-D in 1990 to the editorship of British Vogue — a career built in London's street-style magazine underground before it reached Condé Nast's top floor. This mix traces the stylists who trained his eye, the Ladbroke Grove and Soho scene that raised him, and the editors who now follow the template he set.
The Kynda mix for Edward Enninful
- Key Influence · i-D by Terry Jones (1980). Terry Jones founded i-D in 1980 as a fanzine of street portraits with the winking smile logo, and it was Jones who made Enninful fashion director at eighteen in 1990 — the youngest ever at an international title. Enninful held the post for more than two decades, learning editing, casting and page-making inside Jones's cut-and-paste, document-the-street house style. Everything about his belief that fashion should look like the actual world begins here.','' ''
- Influencia Obscura · When You're a Boy by Simon Foxton (2009). Foxton, the great under-credited British menswear stylist, spotted the teenage Enninful on a London train and pulled him into modelling and then styling — the single chance encounter that started the career. His retrospective at The Photographers' Gallery gathered decades of work with Nick Knight and Jason Evans, images that put Black British men in tweeds and suburban hedgerows and rewrote who fashion imagery could be about.
- Local Roots · Judy Blame: Never Again by Judy Blame (2016). Blame — born Christopher Barnes — made jewellery from safety pins, bottle tops and found rubbish, art-directed Neneh Cherry and Björk, and was a fixture of the same Soho and Ladbroke Grove nightlife that formed Enninful in the late eighties and nineties. His ICA show gathered the collages and objects of that world. The London scene both men came from treated improvisation and club-floor invention as a legitimate route into fashion.
- Beyond the Medium · Mahogany by Berry Gordy (1975). Diana Ross plays a Chicago department-store assistant who becomes a Rome runway star, designing her own costumes for the film. For a generation of Black fashion practitioners it was the rare mainstream image of glamour, ambition and couture in Black hands — a touchstone Enninful's work repeatedly echoes in its belief that aspirational fashion imagery should include people who had been kept out of it.
- Peer · LOVE by Katie Grand (2011). Grand came out of the same nineties London magazine world — Dazed & Confused, then Pop, then LOVE, which she founded at Condé Nast in 2009. She and Enninful are exact contemporaries who both turned stylist credibility into editorships, and both used biannual and monthly titles to cast outside the standard model pool. LOVE is the clearest parallel experiment in stylist-as-editor publishing.
- From the Canon · British Vogue, December 2017 — 'Great Britain' by Edward Enninful (2017). His first issue as editor-in-chief put Adwoa Aboah on the cover shot by Steven Meisel, with a masthead overhauled to include Naomi Campbell, Pat McGrath and Grace Coddington as contributing editors. It sold out and set the terms of his whole tenure: British identity read as plural, cover casting as editorial argument, and the stylist's eye applied to every page rather than just the fashion well.
- Key Collaborator · Pat McGrath: Five Decades of Fashion by Pat McGrath (2015). McGrath and Enninful met as teenagers in London and have worked together ever since, across i-D, Italian and American Vogue, W and British Vogue, where she became a contributing editor. She is the most consistent single collaborator of his career. This volume collects the makeup work — painted, sculptural, often extreme — that gives his editorials their faces, and documents a partnership that predates either's fame.
- Legacy · Dazed, Ib Kamara's editorship by Ib Kamara (2021). Kamara, the Sierra Leone-born stylist who became editor-in-chief of Dazed in 2021 and art and image director at Off-White, is the clearest inheritor: a Black British stylist who turned editorial authorship into institutional power, following the route Enninful opened. His pages carry forward the same practice of casting from diaspora communities and treating a magazine as a constructed world rather than a product grid.
