Moonlight: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Barry Jenkins built "Moonlight" from Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished play and a cinephile's education: Hong Kong romanticism, French body-cinema, and the L.A. Rebellion's patient realism, all transposed to Liberty City, Miami. The mix traces those lines outward to the Miami sounds in its bloodstream, the collaborators who gave it its texture, and the films that followed its permission.
The Kynda mix for Moonlight
- Key Influence · In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai (2000). Jenkins has repeatedly named Wong Kar-wai as the formative influence on his filmmaking, and "Moonlight"'s saturated palette, longing-across-distance structure and music-cued emotional swells are directly descended from it. The decision to let yearning go unspoken between Chiron and Kevin for a decade mirrors Chow and Su's deferred romance; cinematographer James Laxton and Jenkins discussed Christopher Doyle's color work openly while prepping the film's three-chapter look.
- Influencia Obscura · Beau Travail by Claire Denis (1999). Denis's Foreign Legion film, with its muscled bodies moving in abstract ritual and its ocean light, is the key to "Moonlight"'s most lyrical passages: the swimming-lesson baptism, the sweat and sand, the camera's frank attention to Black male physicality without voyeurism. Jenkins and Laxton have discussed Denis and cinematographer Agnès Godard's work when describing how to photograph skin and water in Florida heat.
- Local Roots · Clean Up Woman by Betty Wright (1971). Wright cut this at Miami's TK/Deep City orbit as a teenager, and it remains the defining sound of Black Miami soul — the city Jenkins and McCraney both grew up in, blocks apart in Liberty City, without knowing each other. That local lineage of Miami R&B and the bass music that followed it supplies the cultural air of the film's diner and car-radio scenes, where music carries class, memory and place.
- Beyond the Medium · 3 'N the Mornin' (Part Two) by DJ Screw (1996). Jenkins asked Britell to run his string and piano cues through chopped-and-screwed processing — slowed, pitched down, distorted — the technique DJ Screw invented in Houston for codeine-paced mixtapes. Britell applied it to classical instrumentation so Chiron's theme degrades and deepens across the three chapters. It is one of the decade's most literal imports of a Southern Black vernacular practice into film scoring.
- Peer · Pariah by Dee Rees (2011). Rees's Brooklyn-set debut, about a Black teenage girl navigating queerness within her family, preceded "Moonlight" by five years and shares Bradford Young's painterly low-light photography of dark skin. The two films form the core of a 2010s wave of Black American queer cinema emerging through Sundance labs, and Jenkins has spoken about the generation of filmmakers working alongside him toward that same opening.
- Key Collaborator · The Brothers Size by Tarell Alvin McCraney (2007). McCraney wrote the unpublished play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" that Jenkins adapted, and shares the film's story credit; this Brother/Sister Plays entry, set in Louisiana and drawing on Yoruba Ogun mythology, shows the dramatist's own voice — fraternal love, incarceration, Black masculinity rendered in heightened poetic speech. It is the clearest view of the theatrical source that gave "Moonlight" its three-part spine.
- Legacy · The Last Black Man in San Francisco by Joe Talbot (2019). Talbot and Jimmie Fails's lyrical, gentrification-haunted debut arrived in the lane "Moonlight" opened: an A24-released, formally ambitious portrait of Black friendship and belonging that prizes beauty and tenderness over social-issue plotting. Its swelling score, painterly compositions and willingness to let two young Black men simply be soft with each other are unimaginable in American indie distribution before 2016.
