Lisa: influences, peers and legacy

Every connection with its receipt

Lalisa Manobal left Buriram for Seoul at 14, the only trainee accepted from a 4,000-person YG audition in Bangkok, and became Blackpink's rapper-dancer before building a solo career that runs through Teddy Park's production, Crazy Horse Paris and HBO's The White Lotus. This mix tracks the Thai dance-crew roots, the YG lineage she auditioned for, and the Thai and K-pop generation now following her blueprint.

The Kynda mix for Lisa

  • Key Influence · Fantastic Baby by BIGBANG (2012). Lisa has repeatedly said BIGBANG was the reason she auditioned for YG Entertainment at all: as a Thai teenager she watched their performances and decided that was the company she wanted. 'Fantastic Baby' is the group at its most maximal, the swagger-rap-plus-hook formula YG built its house style on, and the template for the rap-break-into-chant structure that Blackpink inherited and Lisa personally carried as the group's rapper.
  • Influencia Obscura · Savage X Fenty Show by Parris Goebel (2019). Before K-pop, Lisa's training was street dance with the Thai crew We Zaa Cool, and the choreographic vocabulary she favors — heavy isolations, Polynesian-inflected hip-hop grooves, group formations built for camera — runs through Parris Goebel, the New Zealand choreographer whose Royal Family crews reshaped commercial dance worldwide. Goebel's Fenty spectacle is the clearest statement of that fashion-meets-street-dance idiom Lisa works inside.
  • Local Roots · Lullaby by GOT7 (2018). BamBam and Lisa danced together in the Bangkok crew We Zaa Cool as kids, both won auditions out of Thailand within a couple of years of each other, and both became the Thai member of a major K-pop group. Their friendship predates either debut and is among the best-documented cross-company bonds in the industry. GOT7's multilingual 'Lullaby' shows the parallel career the other half of that crew built in Seoul.
  • Beyond the Medium · Forever Crazy by Crazy Horse Paris (2012). In September 2023 Lisa performed a three-night guest residency at Crazy Horse Paris, the avant-garde Parisian cabaret founded by Alain Bernardin in 1951 — a genuinely unexpected crossing that drew enormous commentary and some censure in Chinese media. The house's signature language of light projected onto the body, precision choreography and tableau staging is a tradition far outside K-pop, and she stepped directly into it.
  • Peer · Maria by Hwasa (2020). Hwasa of Mamamoo emerged in the same late-2010s window as the other great non-traditional idol presence — a performer selling attitude and physicality rather than demureness, and succeeding solo on exactly that. 'Maria' is her self-written declaration of that independence, released the year before Lisa's own solo debut, and the two represent parallel answers to the same question of what a K-pop woman's solo career could look like.
  • From the Canon · Lalisa by Lisa (2021). Her solo debut single album, and the clearest statement of what she wanted her name to mean: a title track built around her own given name, and a video that staged Thai traditional headdress and costume in a Korean-produced pop format. It broke records for a solo K-pop artist's first-week sales and set the terms — Thai identity foregrounded rather than smoothed away — for everything in her solo catalog since.
  • Key Collaborator · Ddu-Du Ddu-Du by Blackpink (2018). Teddy Park, the former 1TYM rapper turned YG's chief hitmaker, wrote and produced nearly the whole of Blackpink's catalog and shaped how Lisa's rap verses were deployed — short, percussive, placed as the track's detonation point. 'Ddu-Du Ddu-Du' is the fullest example of that architecture, and of the producer whose ear defined the first decade of her recorded voice.
  • Legacy · Batter Up by Babymonster (2024). YG's next girl group debuted explicitly positioned as the successors to Blackpink, with Thai member Chiquita among them — a direct consequence of the Bangkok audition pipeline Lisa's success made permanent. 'Batter Up' leads with rap in the hard, percussive register Lisa established as the group rapper's job at YG, and the whole project is unimaginable without the decade she spent proving the model exported.
