Kehlani: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Kehlani's music maps Oakland soul onto 2010s alt-R&B: a Bay Area kid who came up through a teen band on America's Got Talent, built a following on free mixtapes, and never stopped being a dancer first. This mix traces the neo-soul vocalists they grew up on, the Town's own lineage, the dance training that shapes their phrasing and videos, and the younger R&B singers now working in the lane the mixtapes opened.
The Kynda mix for Kehlani
- Key Influence · The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill (1998). Kehlani has repeatedly named Lauryn Hill as the model for a singer who raps and a rapper who sings without apology, and the sung-spoken conversational cadence across Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here descends directly from Miseducation's interludes and confessional address. Hill's blend of hip-hop drum programming with live soul instrumentation is the template Kehlani's early mixtape producers worked from.†
- Influencia Obscura · Groove Theory (1995). Amel Larrieux's airy, almost weightless soprano over Bryce Wilson's hip-hop programming is the mid-90s hinge between R&B and neo-soul that most listeners skip past on the way to Badu. Kehlani's head-voice runs and the way melodies float above boom-bap drums on the early mixtapes sit squarely in this lineage, a record far better known to the producers Kehlani worked with than to their audience.
- Local Roots · Even Closer by Goapele (2001). Goapele built an independent soul career out of Oakland a decade before Kehlani, proving a Bay Area singer could reach a national audience without relocating to Los Angeles. 'Closer' became an anthem of the same scene Kehlani emerged from, and the city's blend of jazz-schooled musicianship, Black radical politics and hyphy-adjacent rhythm runs through both artists' catalogs.
- Beyond the Medium · Revelations by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (1960). Kehlani trained seriously as a dancer before singing professionally and still choreographs their own visuals, and Ailey's company is the reference point for Black American concert dance built from spirituals and gospel. Revelations' translation of sacred music into body movement is the logic behind Kehlani's video work, where choreography carries the emotional argument of a song rather than decorating it.†
- Peer · Ctrl by SZA (2017). SZA and Kehlani emerged on parallel tracks in the mid-2010s, both building audiences on free releases before major-label debuts and both writing R&B that admits to jealousy, confusion and bad decisions in plain language. Ctrl arrived months after SweetSexySavage and the two records effectively defined the era's confessional alt-R&B register for a generation of listeners.
- From the Canon · You Should Be Here by Kehlani (2015). The free mixtape that turned a regional name into a Grammy-nominated one, and the clearest statement of Kehlani's method: no features chasing radio, songwriting that moves between rapped verses and sung hooks mid-track, and an Oakland specificity in the references. It's the record that explains everything after it, because the major-label albums are refinements of the voice established here.
- Key Collaborator · Invasion of Privacy by Cardi B (2018). Kehlani sings the hook on 'Ring,' one of the album's few tender moments, and the collaboration showcases what Kehlani brings to other artists' records: a melodic counterweight that makes a hard rap album breathe. The partnership also marked Kehlani's crossover into mainstream hip-hop features, a role they have continued to play across the genre since.
- Legacy · What I Didn't Tell You by Coco Jones (2022). Jones arrived into an R&B landscape Kehlani helped rebuild — a young Black singer allowed to be vocally traditional and lyrically blunt at the same time, building an audience through direct-to-fan releases before major rollout. The conversational candor and genre-fluid confidence of her breakout project belongs to the lane that Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here opened.
