Jeremy Strong: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Jeremy Strong built his craft by literally working for the actors he revered — fetching coffee and running lines as an assistant to Daniel Day-Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Dustin Hoffman — before Yale, RADA and Steppenwolf gave him a vocabulary for total immersion. This mix traces that apprenticeship lineage, the ascetic theater theory behind his 'sacrificial' reputation, and the Succession-era television it helped define.
The Kynda mix for Jeremy Strong
- Key Influence · There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson (2007). Strong's formative apprenticeship was as an assistant to Daniel Day-Lewis, whom he approached as a teenager after idolizing his work; he has spoken repeatedly about Day-Lewis as the model for an actor who disappears wholly into a role. Daniel Plainview is the apex of that method — a performance built from period speech, posture and sustained in-character commitment, the template for the all-consuming approach Strong later brought to Kendall Roy.
- Influencia Obscura · Towards a Poor Theatre by Jerzy Grotowski (1968). Grotowski's manifesto strips theater to the actor's body and a self-exposing 'total act,' demanding the performer sacrifice privacy rather than display technique. The vocabulary of suffering and self-offering that journalists attach to Strong's process — the refusal to break character, the insistence that the work be dangerous — descends from this European tradition far more than from any Hollywood notion of star acting.
- Local Roots · True West by Sam Shepard (1980). Strong trained with Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, the ensemble whose identity was forged by Gary Sinise and John Malkovich's volcanic 1982 production of Shepard's brother-versus-brother play. That house style — physically reckless, confrontational, built on actors trusting each other to go too far — is the clearest ancestor of the fraternal cruelty Strong plays in Succession's Roy family scenes.
- Beyond the Medium · Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke (1929). Rilke's letters insist that art must come from inner necessity — that you make it because you would die without making it. The book has become scripture for actors who treat the craft as vocation rather than career, and Strong's much-quoted framing of his work as a matter of life-and-death seriousness belongs to exactly this romantic lineage of the artist as someone with no alternative.
- Peer · Marriage Story by Noah Baumbach (2019). Driver is Strong's closest contemporary: a conservatory-trained American actor who moved between prestige television and auteur cinema while carrying a reputation for not watching his own work and for an uncompromising, interior intensity. Marriage Story is the showcase — a man cracking open in real time in domestic close-up, the same register of masculine collapse Strong mines in Kendall Roy's worst nights.
- From the Canon · Succession by Jeremy Strong (2018). Four seasons as Kendall Roy earned Strong an Emmy and a Golden Globe and made him the defining performer of prestige television's final act. The role is also the fullest record of his method: a character built from physical tics, rap-adjacent swagger as armor, and a bottomless need for paternal approval, sustained across years so that the audience watches a man deteriorate in near real time.
- Key Collaborator · Peep Show by Jesse Armstrong (2003). Armstrong created Succession and wrote Kendall Roy, tailoring the character's humiliations around Strong's capacity to absorb them. Peep Show, co-created with Sam Bain, is the origin of his craft: cringe comedy built on self-deluding interior monologue and status anxiety between two men who cannot escape each other. Every Roy sibling exchange is that engine scaled up to a billion dollars.
- Legacy · Industry by Mickey Down (2020). Created with Konrad Kay, Industry inherits the template Strong's Kendall Roy established: finance-world drama where jargon is weaponized, characters are addicted to proximity to power, and the camera stays unflatteringly close on young people destroying themselves for approval. Its performers work in the same register of charm curdling into panic that Strong made television's dominant mode.
