Avengers: Doomsday: influences, peers and legacy
Every connection with its receipt
Avengers: Doomsday is the Russo brothers' return to Marvel's crossover machine, this time rebuilding it around Doctor Doom rather than Thanos. Its DNA runs through Lee and Kirby's Fantastic Four, Jim Starlin's cosmic epics, and Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars, filtered through the Russos' own Cleveland-bred, ensemble-juggling craft. This mix maps the comics, collaborators and contemporaries feeding it.
The Kynda mix for Avengers: Doomsday
- Key Influence · Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman (2015). Hickman's 2015 crossover, built from his Fantastic Four and Avengers runs, ends the multiverse in a Battleworld ruled by God Emperor Doom — the template Marvel Studios has openly pointed to for its post-Endgame multiverse saga, with Doomsday positioned as the setup to Avengers: Secret Wars. Doom as the apex antagonist of a collapsing multiverse, rather than a Fantastic Four villain alone, originates here.
- Influencia Obscura · Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment by Roger Stern and Mike Mignola (1989). A graphic novel few outside comics shops know: Doom, having won a sorcerers' contest, drags Strange to Hell to free his mother's soul. Mignola's art gives Doom gothic pathos rather than tyranny, and Stern supplies the Romani-born origin that humanizes him. It is the key text for anyone arguing Doom can anchor a film as a tragic figure, which a Downey-led Doomsday requires.
- Local Roots · American Splendor by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (2003). Anthony and Joe Russo grew up in Cleveland and shot their earliest features there; this adaptation of Harvey Pekar's Cleveland comics is the city's other great comics-to-screen artifact. Pekar's hospital-clerk autobiography and the Russos' blockbuster maximalism are opposite poles of the same Ohio lineage — both built on treating comics panels as a legitimate screenwriting source.
- Beyond the Medium · Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner (1876). Four evenings, a cursed object, a cast of gods and mortals whose arcs only resolve across the whole cycle: Wagner invented the serialized mega-narrative that the MCU's multi-film structure echoes, and critics have long read Infinity War and Endgame as Ring-shaped. Doomsday's demand that audiences carry a decade of prior installments into the theater is the same bargain Bayreuth struck with its audience.
- Peer · Dune: Part Two by Denis Villeneuve (2024). The contemporary benchmark for adapting a dense source mythology at enormous scale while keeping dozens of named characters legible. Released into the same post-pandemic theatrical market Doomsday must survive, it demonstrated that audiences will still turn out for a sequel demanding full knowledge of its predecessor — the exact proposition the Russos are testing with a multiverse-wide ensemble.
- Key Collaborator · Loki by Kate Herron (2021). Waldron, a credited writer on Doomsday, created the series that introduced the MCU's branching-timeline rules, the Time Variance Authority and He Who Remains — the mechanics any multiverse-spanning Avengers film must obey. Herron directed the first season from his scripts. Waldron also wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, making him the franchise's principal architect of its multiverse grammar.
- Legacy · Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse by Joaquim Dos Santos (2023). Doomsday has not yet released, so its successors do not exist; what already inherits the Russo crossover model is the multiverse event film. Across the Spider-Verse takes the many-worlds convergence the Russos made commercially dominant and pushes it into animation, where hundreds of variant designs become the spectacle itself — the idea Doomsday will attempt in live action.
